The Neko Harbour was discovered during the early 20th century by the Belgian explorer, Adrien de Gerlache.
It was named after the Scottish whaling boat, the Neko, which regularly operates in the area between 1911 and 1924. It is also where the old refuge camp, Captain Fliess Refuge, is located. It was opened on Apr 4, 1949 and managed by the Argentinian Navy.
It was inaugurated together as the Refugio Neko with the Penguin Observatory and the Rescue Station. It was destroyed by a storm back in 2009 but eventually rebuilt in 2011. Unfortunately, it was washed away by a tidal wave in the 2010s but you can still see some of the concrete base support.
