Did you know that Vietnam is comprised of 54 ethnic groups? Will it also surprise you that over 80% of the country’s population is living along the Red River delta, central coastal delta, and the Mekong delta? Motorbikes and boats are most of the country’s preferred mode of transportation.
One of the more iconic boats in the country is the basket boat. It is unique in the sense that it does not resemble a boat at all and legend has it that since the French levied so much tax on boats in the country, local fishermen couldn’t afford to pay them. What they did was to designed a circular woven “basket” that just so happened to be able to function as boats as well.
The basket boat quickly became the trend du jour primarily thanks to their tax-free status and what can only be described as impressive engineering.
