Komodo dragons can only be found on 5 Indonesian islands and nowhere else. Four of these island make up Komodo National Park. The main island being home to the majority of komodo dragons is naturally commonly called Komodo Island. It’s a popular tourist destination and there have been reports of poachers illegally taking komodo dragons off the islands.
Komodo dragons are the largest lizards on Earth and they can grow up to 10 fee long which is approximately the length of s compact car (with their tails growing as long as their body and strong enough to take down a deer!). They also can weigh around 135 kilograms which is about the weight of a panda. Unfortunately, the population is in a dire situation. The species lack egg-laying females, coupled with poaching and destruction of their habitat, has threatened the population immensely.
These giant lizards are venomous and carnivorous. They can eat any meat, from a small animal to a giant water buffalo! They are also known to eat their own kind. They are extremely adaptable to their environment. They can swim between the 5 islands of Indonesia and run as fast as 12 mph.
