With the US embargo after the Cuba Revolution, strict trade restrictions were set in place, and all imports of American cars and parts were prohibited. Result: Cuba is like visiting the world’s largest classic cars museum throughout an entire island!
You’ll see a lot of locals working on cars in their free time because the country does not have access to replacement parts (not to mention most aren’t being made anymore). They’ve become incredibly creative and keep these vintage gems running with repurposed parts and makeshift replacements. This resourcefulness has kept so many of the beautiful classics cruising about the streets of Havana as shiny and colorful as ever.
