The muriquis (especially the northern muriquis) are possibly the most peaceful primates to have ever existed. In fact, their limbs and tail become so entwined that it’s hard to tell where one monkey ends and where another starts. They don’t fight over food or territories and it’s envious that their way of living is free of conflict and full of hugs which earned them the “hippie monkey” moniker.
Also called woolly spider monkeys, they are unfortunately one of the most endangered and are also largely unknown and unnoticed. This is especially surprising since the muriquis are endemic to Brazil and many locals don’t even know they exist!
