Photo of the Day: Leopard Seal

An expedition to Antarctica won’t be complete until you cross path with a leopard seal. The third largest seal in the world is an amazing specimen to observe both in and out of water but is largely misunderstood.

The leopard seals are lucky that they have a few natural predators. The Orcas, are currently the only known predators of the leopard seals. If they don’t have any unfortunate encounters with Orcas, leopard seals can live up to almost 30 years.

Leopard seals may look cute but they can be dangerous and have been known to kill humans. An incident in 2003, a marine biologist was drowned after being dragged nearly 200 feet underwater by a leopard seal.
