Travel Photo of the Day: Azorean Pineapple

Care to take a guess what this unique looking bloom is?

Many people are not aware how beautiful the pineapple plants are as they prepare to bloom.

A bud forms in the center (as seen in the photo) at the base and will soon rise on the stalk that holds it above all the foliages.

The bud resembles a colorful pinecone with tufts of leaves growing from the crown and it usually composed of about 50 to 200 blossoms.

What is unique about the Azorean pineapple is that the island of São Miguel is the ONLY place in the world where pineapples are grown in greenhouses! These pineapples are much sweeter and less acidic than the pineapples grown elsewhere.
